Revolutionary modular fretless bass system with interchangeable necks

The Staccato Fretless Bass is one of the most innovative electric basses ever created. Designed by engineer Pat Townshend and backed by notable musicians including Bill Wyman and Mick Jagger, the Staccato introduced a revolutionary modular concept in which a single body accepts multiple interchangeable necks. Within seconds, players can switch between a fretless or fretted bass, a six-string guitar or even a twelve-string guitar while maintaining the same familiar instrument.

The body is constructed from moulded fibreglass with a polyurethane outer shell and incorporates a precision-machined magnesium alloy receiver. The neck slides smoothly into place on roller bearings before locking securely with a patented quick-release mechanism, while electrical connections engage automatically as the neck is installed.

The neck itself is cast from aerospace-grade magnesium alloy, a material also used in motorsport and aerospace engineering. This construction provides exceptional rigidity, extremely low weight and remarkable sustain far beyond that of conventional wooden instruments. The specially developed composite fingerboard closely resembles ebony in both feel and appearance while remaining highly resistant to wear and environmental changes.

Electronics were developed in collaboration with renowned pickup designer Kent Armstrong. Each interchangeable neck carries its own dedicated pickup set, which automatically connects when installed. Multiple switching options allow players to select single-coil, parallel, humbucking and different output configurations, offering an impressive range of tonal possibilities.

A unique touch-sensitive volume control with digital display, combined with an advanced dual-stage tuning system featuring coarse bridge adjustment and ultra-precise headstock tuning, delivers exceptional tuning stability and highly accurate setup.

Thanks to its lightweight construction, perfect balance and extraordinary sustain, the Staccato produces a clear, resonant and highly musical voice suited equally to expressive fretless playing, fusion, rock and studio work. Even today, the Staccato remains a landmark achievement in instrument engineering and a highly sought-after collector's piece.
