The Kawai KC10 Spectra is a versatile digital synthesizer from the early 1990s, designed as an affordable sound source and performance keyboard for musicians and MIDI users. It combines digital PCM and Digital Cyclic (DC) waveforms with extensive Multi Patch functionality, built-in drum patterns and an arpeggiator.

The Spectra features 128 digital waveforms, 64 presets and 32 programmable patches. Its Multi Patch function allows up to four patches to be used simultaneously. Each patch can be adjusted independently for volume, transposition and tuning, and individual patches can be assigned to specific keyboard zones, making complex layers and splits possible.

For rhythmic accompaniment, the KC10 Spectra features a dedicated drum section with 36 built-in rhythm patterns, including intros, fills and endings. Different patterns can be combined during playback, while the drum sounds can also be played directly from the keyboard. Custom drum parts can be recorded via MIDI.

The synthesizer also includes an arpeggiator that arpeggiates held chords in the lower section of the keyboard. Sounds can be edited using parameters including volume, chorus, waveform, vibrato and automatic pitch bend. Two envelopes can also be applied to a waveform, with several velocity response curves available.

The velocity-sensitive keyboard responds to playing dynamics but does not support aftertouch. Extensive MIDI functionality makes the Spectra an interesting sound source within a MIDI setup. Program changes and SysEx data can be used via MIDI, while patches, Multi settings and drum data can be transferred and stored.
